  Thallus crustose, leprose, powdery, pale bluish grey, whitish grey or greenish white, diffuse, forming a thin to thick ±continuous finely granular crust in extensive irregularly spreading patches to 10 cm wide. Margin delimited or not, with occasional short fragile poorly defined lobes to 1.4 mm wide and c. 100 μm thick, with an upturned margin forming an irregular rim. Soredia fine or coarse, dispersed or forming a thick continuous layer, ±globose, 50–70 μm wide, commonly aggregated in ±round consoredia 80–200 μm wide; mostly without distinctly projecting hyphae, rarely with hyphae projecting to c. 40 μm. Medulla absent. Hyphae 2.0–3.5 μm thick. Lower surface with a dark bluish grey to dark brown hypothallus (tomentum).Photobiont cells ±spherical, 6–15 μm diam. Hypothallus grey to blue-grey or dark brown, often extending slightly beyond the thallus margin.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus K+ yellow, C+ red, KC+ red, P+ yellow; UV–; containing atranorin (major), zeorin (major), lecanoric acid (major), rangiformic acid or jackinic acid (minor), gyrophoric acid (trace), 3’-demethylatranorin (trace).
     
  Occurs in coastal and hinterland forests in Qld and N.S.W.; grows on soil, rock and on mosses on moist rock ledges. Also known from Norfolk Island, Sri Lanka and Japan.
